The English settled the area in 1664, and the town, named after a family named “Allen” that had a large farm in the area, and from “Hurst” a French word for “sandy knoll or “wood,” Allenhurst, New Jersey is a wealthy beach town in Monmouth County that features well-maintained 19th century homes, comfortable residential neighborhoods and great beaches.
Once a farming community, Allenhurst was not incorporated until 1897 when the first volunteer fire department was organized and a pavilion was constructed on the beach. In the early 1900’s most of the land had been purchased by developers, large Victorian and Tudor-style homes had been constructed, and little space was left over for commercial development.
With an estimated population of 703 (2003), visitors find both the homes and the beaches to be pristine, and the area around Allenhurst offers many activities during the year, with festivals, craft shows, theater, shopping, fine dining and even hot air ballooning.
